Nestlé Deutschland is underlining its commitment to renewable electricity: around 70% of its electricity will now come from photovoltaic systems and wind turbines in Germany. This means that its production sites in Hamburg, Neuss and Biessenhofen will continue to be supplied with entirely renewable electricity. This measure is one part of Nestlé’s global strategy to reduce its electricity consumption and meet its remaining power needs exclusively with renewable energies by 2025.
Through power purchase agreements (PPAs) with BKW and other energy suppliers, Nestlé Deutschland will source 80 gigawatt hours of electricity per year from German wind farms and photovoltaic installations by the end of 2026. As a leading provider of sustainable energy solutions, BKW is playing a key role in the execution of this climate-friendly initiative. The total energy requirement of Nestlé sites in Germany is around 113 gigawatt hours per year. With these new measures, Nestlé Deutschland will increase its share of electricity obtained directly from renewable energies to around 70%. To cover the remaining 30% or so, Nestlé will invest in new renewable energy systems and purchase guarantees of origin. In doing so, Nestlé Deutschland will surpass the average share of renewable energies in Germany’s electricity mix – which was 56% in 2023 – by more than 14%.
Focused on CO2 reduction
Jörg Schmitt, Environment & Sustainability Manager for Nestlé production sites in Germany, explains: “Our goal is to use industrial heat pumps to increase our electrification and, in turn, achieve a reduction in fossil fuels. In this context, it is important that our sites use renewable electricity sourced from German photovoltaic systems and wind farms known to us.” Anke Stübing, Head of Sustainability at Nestlé Deutschland, adds: “Thanks to the supply contracts with BKW and other energy providers, the production processes in our German factories can be even more environmentally friendly. This helps us accomplish our ambitious climate targets of halving all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.” BKW played a key role in helping Nestlé make its production processes sustainable and protect the environment, says Stübing.
BKW’s PPA business is growing steadily
Amanda Niklaus, Head of Renewables PPA Origination at BKW, is extremely pleased with the purchase agreement: “We are pleased to be working with Nestlé Deutschland. This is a milestone in our commitment to a sustainable energy future. The agreement underlines the growing demand for clean energy solutions as well as our commitment to supply companies with green energy. In supplying Nestlé Deutschland with renewable electricity, their sustainability objectives are not the only ones we are furthering. We are also accelerating the transition to a more sustainable future.”
BKW has been active in the PPA business for years now. A range of new PPAs were signed last year, including the following:
PPA with the Butendiek offshore wind farm
PPA with the German solar park developer and operator Greenovative
